Hello!
My name is Ellie and my baking/cooking experience began when I was about 10; my little sister and I desperately needed pancakes and wouldn't you know it? Mom had ran out of Aunt Jemima mix (Or maybe this was the time that we found little buggies in the Aunt Jemima mix? Either way. There was no Aunt Jemima.) Now the next part definitely came as a surprise- homemade treats tasted better than the stuff that came from a box! I should probably quickly thank my mom now for never buying us boxed cookies as kids- she certainly raised us right.
From pancakes came cookies, and pies, and eventually overly elaborate cakes that sometimes had me crying on the kitchen floor. I also realized that in a craft as precise as baking, sometimes you need to let some extra creativity out- and this is how I arrived at my love for cooking. Some people may find it weird to be 20 years old, living alone, and spending an hour cooking dinner for just yourself- but I love it!
Preparing, eating, and sharing food is a fabulous (dare I say, therapeutic?) way to spend your time. I hope that my instructions, pictures, challenges, and stories inspire any readers to feel the same as me!
... Which brings me to my next point: Why I am making a blog.
For the last three years I have been teaching cooking and baking at a local day school. Sadly this coming semester, I have chosen to pretend to be an adult and get a 9-5 job, thus making it impossible to teach my kiddies. However, I love teaching people about food. My sisters often turn to me at restaurants to ask if I know how our meal was prepared; I love launching into in-depth explanations about what caramelizing vegetables will do to enhance the flavours of a dish, or how they make the red velvet cake extra velvety (it's vinegar. gross.).
So here I am. No students, and no sisters eating with me frequently enough to (bore?) with my explanations. So I am bringing my kitchen and my lessons to you- my [potentially small, and hopefully one day large] audience.
Enjoy! And let me know what you want to see more of!
xx
